What do you do with junk traffic

Hi everyone.

One of my site has a shedload of junk traffic. When I say junk I mean 20,000 hits a day from one of my sites from a link farm, but the traffic is pretty much junk. Im just tempted to block it all to be honest.

You can always use traffic, even the ones just looking for free stuff. In fact I'm experimenting with a page that will use nothing but the cheapest crap traffic.

If it's successful I'll be buying thousands of hits a day that are just surfers looking for free stuff with no intention of buying anything.

So, take a hint and think about it, because even with my big mouth I'm not saying what I'm doing.

Not a bot, right? Cause if it's a bot I'm not sure you can do anything with it, but I'd love suggestions. I get slammed from bots of trade scripts all the time.

If you know the name of the hit bot (or any bad bot) you can block it with .htaccess, I think.

Yeah, I was curious if there might be a way to use it against other bots or people trying to add things (code and viruses) to your sites.

Use that traffic to push yourself higher on toplists, feed it into a traffic script, send them to a fake tgp, tell them about all kinds of one dollar trial sites, find some pay per click programs, and on and on.

Some uses are more ethical than others.

Well the sending URL is just a whole shedload of toplist buttons. I mean the TLD is all eastern european porn (judging by the actual site not being in English) but this directory that is sending, combined adult toplists, heavy metal toplists, clan toplists and most bizarrely lighthouse toplists, yest light houses. I jest not !

I'll prolly just push it somewhere it may be useful.

I had that happen once. I killed the traffic because it was sucking up a tonne of bandwidth and it`s all bot traffic.

The main type of bot I get hit with usually affects my trade scripts. The first way I can tell is that it's about 20,000 hits an hour despite the fact that I'm only giving that url back a few hundred if that. Also my script will shut it down and if I click on the url I usually go nowhere.

There's also those bots that lay links in the chat rooms and attack your submit forms (and I think there's some that try and sign up in places like this).

Also I'm not sure if they are considered bots but they are those things give you the 1001 comments a day from insurance companies, penis enlargers and gambling sites.

Yours doesn't sound like those. I would either start a top list or get a trade script while you're getting this extra traffic you don't like just to trade it off with someone you might be able to use for alexa growth if nothing else.

In your stats look at the user agents. Some of these will be IE, firefox or some other brower. The rest will be 'bots. Not all 'bots are bad. Good 'bots include SE spyders.
