Audio format question

I have someone who may post audio stories on my site. I don't know that much about audio format. I know the popular one is mp3. But is there something smaller I can use to save bandwidth? Most will be teaser short stories, with a few full length ones. Anyone?

wma is half the size with just slightly less quality.

a wma file at 64k sounds almost as good as a 128k mp3.

im pretty sure you can convert just using windows media player. Thats what i use to change my wma's to mp3's. I don't see why it wouldn't work the opposite way.

Hey, since you seemed to be on the up and up regarding audio software, do you happen to know if there is anything I can use to modify my audio input, like some sort of software mixing board or something with different settings? I currently use Audacity for my initial recording and for everything else, all the way through exporting...but I'm running into some problems with my audio volume. To compensate, I have to amplify in Audacity, which cuts into my audio quality.

I was wondering if there was some sort of software solution that might adjust my audio input in real-time. Something that would modify the audio right as it was going into the computer. It's also possible I just need a better/more sensitive microphone, or a different sound card. If you have any thoughts, I'd be gratfeul.

I'm not sure what this Adobe Soundbooth is that came with CS3, but Adobe Audition was pretty pro if you can still find it. I'm no audiophile myself but i was running through the tutorials and you can even clean pops out of old tracks fairly easily. It's pretty much a mini computer sound studio, especially if you match it up with something like those old Creative Audigy add ons.

Sony makes hi quality equipment, but unless their audio is different from everything else they make, they are way to proprietary.

I make funny movies and post them on youtube. To add some voice or my comments to those movies I'm using software for blind people. Paste text to this software choose voice (male or female) and it reads it, you can export it to mp3 etc. Windows has that tool but it's poor quality.

i use protools for recording because my voice is soft - i heard yours and if you play with the microphone placement, use a windscreen- turn off any electrical near by- including the refrig - you will get rid of a lot of the problems

btw audocity is okay but leaves a tin-y sound hard to edit out without clipping
try sound forge home studio
you can get it very inexpensive from their site for $70 or from ebay for much less-


And a special note to Bill
remember that most users want to easily upload story clips somp3isbest - and the blind community (my first audience btw) hates anything microsoft - because most of their software doesnt work with it
