I wonder why people insist on using codecs which are dead donkey. What is their motivation? Do they get loyalty? Did they write their loser codecs themselves? What?
I mean, as far as codecs goes, WMV/WMA (sigh) is the standard. They suck coz they eat a lot of Ram. I have to disconnect my modem to run a wmv clip. LOL On AVI, DivX won. Anyone who use other codecs need their heads examined. (We only need one opposition against Bill Gates' MicroPenis) What's the point of Real Media? None. Quick Time for Mac users. Sure. If I were to build a movie galley, I'll still stick with mpg/QT, though. AVI, MOV, WMV, RM, ASF, etc... Why bother using them? They don't degrade well at all.

True and it seems with each new OS something breaks people freak out and you have to go back and fix things over and over.
As for Real, QT, etc. it's all about branding. 99% of people know nothing more than "oh, it says I need this.. download here.. ok now I can see it". WMV/WMA now has digital rights management (DRM), which will make a lot of producers choose it hands down (helps that Windows Media Player comes standard on 90%+ of all consumer machines). ![]() I'm no expert but I'd guess most companies (1) can be lazy, easy to stick to what they know (2) will make decisions if perks come with em, like DRM (3) really don't have any clue whatsoever. For the select few that do 'get it', you won't see many comment openly due to the advantages it lends them. Just my one cent, I needed the other for RealOnePlatinum. LOL

Matt's right.
The one thing you need to also consider is popularity and partnerships. Real media comes installed with half of the software and PCs you buy today. Just an example. WMV files are more accepted because, well, Bill Gates owns the universe. I'd say go with what the majority of your users are working with. Screw the complicated codecs, whenever something requires one that I don't have, I just move on, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. |

This just in......
There is this thing called legacy that allows long dead technologies to keep on kicking for those computer users who refuse to upgrade from their commodore 64 etch-a-sketch. Just use mpeg-1, its not the best but I believe all of the players can use it. I am on a Mac so I am partial to quick time (though safari and I are going to fight soon) oh and Im a tech snob.........no I take that back I just wont compress anything with real because it looks like real doo doo. But it does ship on most PC?s along with media player. But since quick time is the best, and programs like director only support quick time, and more developers are using quick time soon this will no longer be an issue regardless of what Billy boy wants you to use. There seems to be a sentiment in the web design world that says if the user cant view it make him get the upgrade or tell him to kiss your ass. I see this more and more, there is so much I could do with flash if everybody would just get DSL. Oh but to be fair I have to give Bill allot of credit I mean who else could release a game system so bad ass and expensive to make that it loses money, just so they could crush sony?s playstation. Take that Netscape!

I can’t put my finger on it but I sense a bit of Microsoft resentment, and I think its coming form the post above. Maybe it’s just me. Never mind.

Im just messin
I use PC?s no problem, they have good things about them. I just like to mess with people since there is so much Mac bashing in the world. You know what I don't like about PC?s though is who ever designed the hot key configuration. I am not stretch armstrong my fingers only reach so far damn it! The game industry drives the computer industry for sure and the x-box is the best platform as far as consoles go. Game designers aren't even utilizing its full capabilities. As for Panther I cant wait to see what it will do for me. Luckily I was not one of those poor people who had to experience the horror that was the apple OS pre OSX for too long. I recently switched and I would have to say because of its BB kernel OSX is by far the better operating system choice. I heard rumors of apple planing to release it on the PC but I don't see it happening for a minute if at all. Apple is real quick to keep things on hush, that link is already gone matt. Oh yeah and doesn't Microsoft own like 25% of Apple anyway, Conglomerates rule the world and Disney is the ring leader. All hail the mouse!

hahah.. they don't like that mirroring stuff, eh? Yeah, all our programmers hated OS 9.. but once they realized what OS X gives them, it was an easy sell. Our lead programmer actually works on his Ti at the coffee shop with secured wireless (aimed at him from our office down the street). Tomorrow's a big day (well, at least, apple always makes it seem that way.. I want a speed bumped 17" Ti.. but it doesn't sound like they're coming.. maybe a price drop, that would be cool).

Let's face it, if it can slice, dice and do everything that the competitor can't but it doesn't have killer apps, it isn't going to sell. On a past Script School radio show I had one of the most talented solo game developers out there, Jeff Minter (Defender 2000 and Tempest 2000 on Atari Jaguar), and he laid it out pretty clear: fun games are what will sell consoles, not killer technology, but the shirts go for the marketing angles. They'd rather have a so-so game with a killer license like The Hulk, then a great game with some unknown character. People call Nintendo games kiddie games, but when you stop and think about it: they have no rival in that niche. They own that market and that is where they make the bulk of their money. So Sony is going to go after the portable market now? Good luck! Without an inventory of good games it will be very difficult for them to compete, and from what I understand they are not making it CD based so none of their games (even the older ps1 titles) will be backward compatible. The problem with XBox is the games. They've overpromised and underdelivered. There are a couple good titles, but there aren't enough good titles to take over Sony. Halo is good. Brute Force was well hyped but only ... ok, IMO. Until the time comes where there are more good games than marketing hype, XBox can have the most killer system on the planet, but they are still going to continue to hemmorage ca$h.

Why else Pam Anderson made money off porn? I wouldn't watch her doing it if even it's free download.
