Question What's In A Name?

I must visit at least thirty boards a day...whew...

And, I must admit...I don't get it...

Why do webmasters register under different nicks for every board?

The reason I say this ...

It's damned confusing to see the same post on a gadzillion boards and each one is under a different nick...

How do they keep track of their names? And, why? What's the point?

How will they ever get known if they keep changing their nicks?

Or..is that the point...to not be known from board to board...

It's too early in the morning for this kind of thinking...I think.

I'm Logos Removed here, and at The Adult Webmaster, and Sexxtreme Resources, Fotofetish, LR forum, ICQ (okay not a forum), and IMDB, IRC...

I use the same avatar too, if they permit user avatars.

I guess I'm just different.. or "special" as my mommy and school teachers used to say in a very condescending tone that was designed to make me feel better about myself...

I'm the same everywhere. It's easiest to remember my name, because if I forget THAT, then I'm in some real trouble.

Raven - I think part of the allure of what you are seeing is the notion of being somebody else at some of these boards, escaping their actions made at another board.

I don't get it either, because webmasters should be also trying to brand their names with their websites. By changing one's name, he/she is only muddying up their branding.

Then again, some webmasters out there prolly should change their names because they aren't worth getting to know, much less do any business with. I would give this to those keyboard warrior types who post that they are going to kick everybody's ass until you see them face to face and they are sticking their nose up asses instead.

I think that sometimes these days that there is way too much emphasis put on being a board celebrity with a gadzillion posts beneath your nick instead of someone who does good, solid business with a legitimate business URL beneath your nick.

Screw the popularity contests, bring on the $$$. I'm not here for my health

What made me think about it is when I see the copy/pastes from board to board.....same post...different nicks....

Like I said, I don't get it.

Wow thats spooky I was jsut skirting this subject in a e-mail to someone else here.

So here goes. My real name is David, my photog, who I've known for many years has always called me Spike so when we got the site together he began to refer to me as webmaster Spike. Then a girl in the office saw a cd cover by a performer called Ian Dury, the album was called Mister (or Mr) Love Pants. Anyway she claimed the suave and dignified character on the cover reminded her of me. So when I registered a yahoo e-mail for collecting info on the adult web business ....

Back in the day, webmasters guarded their identities fiercely....

You wouldn't have seen avatars with everyone's pic on it....hell, we didn't even tell people where we lived....

Now, though...while I can see not posting with 'real' names...it seems to me....for branding purposes..one nick should suffice...especially when it's a copy/paste post on three thousand message boards.

I post with one name only, and its also the name of my website. I am definatly trying to go for the branding :-)

Plus, with boardtracker, I can always see who cross posts and who doesnt. Its fairly easy to see who posts what now.

Hey, StacyCat.....how's it goin'?

I think that's my point.....with Board Tracker and Board Scanner and, I'm sure, others who will create tracking type sites.....it's fairly easy AND fairly annoying...

Yup - BoardScanner cracks me up. I search for specific terms each day - well, and now I get them emailed to me - but you can totally see the SPAMMERs who otherwise might have been overlooked as just "posters" because of the way they are doing it. It's funny. Some post the same message over a period of a week or more, staggering it...others are just more blatant about it. lol

Thanks BoardScanner - now we've gotcha ya Spammers!

Hi all,

I have always opted for Timelord, given I am a Sci-Fi fan & my sir-name is Lord.

The reason I, at times have to try for another handle, is that often they can already be taken.

Mine for example must hold appeal to many Dr Who fans, because I often find the handle is in use already.

I do admit it makes life harder for others, but sometimes I don't have any choice. So I have several handles.

Nowdays by simply using whois scripts anybody can now go lookup our names as the registered owners of our sites, so I tend not to be as paranoid as I was 7 years ago online.

I have to admit i am guilty of this

The first name i try to register is 'Lee' and, if that is not available ill go for the name 'European Lee' either ay the majority of webmasters in the industry know that its me who is posting because of the site/s i use in my tagline

Regards,

Lee

Years ago, I used to use a couple different nics. Then I started to forget some of them. So.... Now I just use the same one everywhere. Since its the only one I can remember.

For all adult related boards, I try to register the nickname monica, but it's often taken, so then you'll see me as monicasreviews.

I've always wanted the same nick because I don't want to confuse people. I do agree with Raven that your nick should kind of be your brand... and my nick has definately become a brand for me and my websites.
