The end of an era? Playboy to go private?

Founder of Playboy, American icon and all around chick magnet Hugh Hefner could lose all control of the magazine he started back in 1953 with a proposed deal that would sell off all the shares that he didn't already own to a private equity firm.

Playboy the magazine hasn't been profitable in years, thanks in large part to all the free crap online. I guess the question is what would a new management bring to the Playboy brand?

I thought his daughter was actually running the company now and that he was retired or semi-retired. Heard that somewhere anyway.

His daughter Christie Hefner resigned as CEO in 2008, so I guess now he wants to buy back all the shares he doesn't own and team up with a private equity firm to take the company private again. He thinks the company can still be profitable despite sluggish magazine sales.

Hefner owns 80% of the company. He wants to buy back the rest. There is value in the company and the brand and the art collection, mansion, etc. His offer was deemed to low by at least one bidder willing to beat his price, the (new) owner of Penthouse.
