Vid Conversion: I WILL Pull my hair out!

Sigh.

I am trying to convert AVI files into MPG files. I don't want anything fancy. I just want something that will take the file and bloody do it.

But converters to do this job offer MPG NTSC, MPG PAL, MPG1, MPG2, MPG PS...

And then you have to code the audio as well.

Why cam't I just click a button?

And I cannot get mpgs to work for the life of me. I am ready to give up, this is insane.

Could someone PLEASE tell me how to convert these bloody things?

This will probably do what you want http://www.avs4you.com/Register.aspx but I think it's a waste of time and money and disk space.

I'd go with the 3 or 4 clicks and go with premiere because it gives you additional things you can do. There are tons of tutorials for premiere that you should be able to figure out in one day. You may need a couple plug ins when getting into flv's but you can pretty much do whatever you want otherwise.

Even photoshop takes more than 1 click for converting, cropping, cutting and pasting etc. standard images.

ulead, sony vegas, and the adobe suite will all convert to MPG rather easily.

What I am confused about is I am given several different MPG options to convert the video to, and then several different options for the audio. I need to know which MPG option I want, and then which audio option will go with it.

In all the reading I've done on the web, it's all rather confusing. I just want to turn this AVI file into an MPG.

I've downloaded a program that will do it. I just need to know which options I'm supposed to be using

Does anyone know of a really clear tutorial that's easy to read?

Whenever I use video programs I run tests because of what you have said but premieres default on mpeg encoder should be okay until you start altering settings.

I'm not sure what you are after though. There are web settings, HD settings, streaming, etc. etc.

I use WinAvi - works great for me, simple one button converting.
